Northern Basement Systems serving North Montpelier, VT

A homeowner in North Montpelier, Vermont, wanted to improve the conditions in the crawl space beneath their home. An untreated crawl space can allow moisture from the ground and outside air to affect the environment beneath the living space, so our team developed a solution that addressed both the crawl space floor and the perimeter above the foundation walls. Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems installed the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System to isolate the crawl space from ground moisture. The durable liner creates a clean, bright barrier across the crawl space and provides a significant improvement over an exposed earth floor. A SmartDrain™ was incorporated into the CleanSpace system to provide additional protection against unexpected water entering the space above the encapsulation liner. SmartDrain also includes a WaterWatch® alarm that can alert the homeowner if water reaches the drain.

The rim joists were then insulated with closed-cell spray foam. Rather than stopping the insulation at the rim joist itself, our crew extended the spray foam downward until it met the CleanSpace liner. This helps address air movement around the perimeter and creates a more continuous transition between the insulated rim joist area and the encapsulated crawl space below. This combination is particularly valuable in Vermont, where cold winter air entering around an uninsulated rim joist can contribute to cold floors and uncomfortable rooms above the crawl space. 

With CleanSpace encapsulation, SmartDrain protection, and closed-cell spray foam insulation working together, this North Montpelier crawl space is now cleaner, better insulated, and better protected from ground moisture and outside air.
