Challenge
A homeowner in Norwich, Vermont, wanted to make their basement safer and more functional. The existing basement did not have the large window opening and exterior well needed to provide a convenient secondary means of escape, and limited natural light made the space feel darker and more enclosed. The Northern Basement Systems team evaluated the foundation wall and surrounding exterior area to determine the proper location and installation requirements for a new egress window. The goal was to create a properly sized opening while providing a durable exterior window well with easy access to grade.
Solution
Our crew excavated the area outside the foundation and created the necessary opening for the new basement window. The egress window was installed along with a RockWell egress window well. The oversized well provides plenty of space outside the window and features built-in steps for easier emergency exit. Its stone-textured interior also creates a much more attractive view from inside the basement than a traditional metal window well.
