Challenge
The structural support beneath this East Charleston, Vermont, home needed significant improvement. The existing system included older, makeshift supports beneath the framing, raising concerns about the long-term stability of the floor and beam system above. Because of the size of the area and the number of locations requiring additional support, this wasn't a repair that could be addressed with a single post. Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems evaluated the existing beams, floor framing, and support locations to determine how the loads above could be more effectively supported. The inspection showed that multiple support points were needed throughout the space. A large SmartJack® system was selected to create a coordinated structural support network beneath the existing beam system.
Solution
Our crew installed multiple SmartJack® steel support posts beneath the home's beams.
The posts were positioned at carefully selected locations to transfer loads from the beam system down through the SmartJacks and their engineered bases.
Unlike temporary posts or improvised supports, SmartJacks are designed specifically for permanent structural stabilization. Their adjustable assemblies allow each support to be fitted precisely beneath the beam and tightened as needed.

The home's beam and floor system now has multiple engineered support points positioned throughout the affected area. The large SmartJack installation replaced the previous collection of inadequate supports with a coordinated structural system designed to provide dependable support for the home above.
